Intelligent Aerial Surveillance system using Swarm Robotics

A large number of soldiers are active at the national borders and hostile regions to safeguard the civilian people and enhance the security to them; though, in the case of any emergency, some mechanism based on the modern electronics and technology is essential to alert the military officers active in surveillance areas so that they can make a prompt arrangement to lock the security and tighten the forces.

Me and my team were aware with this major problem in military and are working hard to come up with effective and economic solution. We saw aerial surveillance using drones playing a major in the monitoring of the remote areas for applications like military surveillance, seismic activity monitoring, earthquake detection and disaster relief operations etc.

Swarm algorithms are deeply ingrained in nature. One such algorithms which governs the motion of birds in a flock is Boid’s Algorithm. Inspired by boids algorithm I come up with a new algorithm to control hundreds of drones in a decentralized nature. These drones can autonomously self organized over the national borders in the most optimal way and monitor it. Object detection is then used to detect any unusual objects at national borders and notify the authorities about the same.

This saves lifes of thousands of soldiers who are safeguarding our nation and helps authorities take quick action against any threats to the nation. We presented this solution at DevMerge’18 at Indian Institute of Technology ,Madras and won 2nd prize.

I developed the following simulation using OpenGL to demonstrate the behaviour of algorithm with 15 drones (green dots) trying to find the optimal solution to cover target area (white dot) while avoiding obstacles (red dots) and also avoiding collision with other drone.
