“Everyone needs a coach. We all need people who can give us feedback, that’s how we improve. Unfortunately there’s one group of people who receive close to none feedback at all. And these people have the most important job in the world. They are our teachers.”
At Codespace’19, a 24-hour national level hackathon organised by Computer Society of India – VIT, we were able to come up with “Synapse”, a real-time feedback system for teachers and we ended up winning the 3rd position.
Synapse is a portal where teachers can login and look at the various lectures they had throughout the day. On clicking one of the lectures, they get a transcript of the lecture (done using Google speech-to-text) along with the corresponding attention and confusion scores of the students (which includes the EEG based scores along with the pose estimation score). We are also able to identify the exact terms/topics where the confusion score of the student was particularly high. The overall reports are also mailed to the teacher after every lecture. The setup requires one of the student to wear an EEG device (we used a NeuroSky Mindwave Mobile 2) as well as a smartphone mounted on a tripod for overall pose estimation of the students. So, in essence, the teacher can go back to her room at the end of the day and exactly pin point the parts of her lecture that needs to be improved. Further, she can take a look at our reports of other teachers who scored significantly higher in that particular topic and incorporate those methods in to her own teachings.
Since we are getting the EEG values of the student for a long duration, we are also able to determine his/her stress levels as well as attention disorders. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have done a tremendous job in US by deploying their camera-based solution to improve the quality of education in schools. India needs to have some sort of teacher-feedback system available so that even we could improve our academic curriculum at the elementary level. Our teachers deserve better.
